Working on a new map. Installed train, tracks, and call box. I want to drive it in-game to check if all is okay before moving on. After renting it, the train pulls up but there is no menu item offered to enter it. “E” doesn’t allow it either. I checked the same train system in a completed map and it works with no problems. Any ideas?

Are you able to “Tab” into it? Check all of your settings for “switch to trains” and something along the lines of the train being “tabble” (I’m not completely sure both of those setting still exist in FS22). Also check your game log for anything train related. Those are the most basic things that will cause this.
